European Master and Certification Program
in Risk Engineering and Management

In the framework of the EU FP7 project iNTeg-Risk "Early Recognition, Monitoring and Integrated Management of Emerging, New Technology related Risks", Steinbeis University (STI Advanced Risk Technologies) and other project partners have set up a modern and modular European Master and Certification Program with the emphasis on management and analysis of emerging risks related to new technologies. Herewith, we announce the forthcoming course

VD-R26 QRA&A
Quantitative Risk Assessment and Advanced Applications

April 8 - 12, 2013
Stuttgart, Germany

Lecturers: Valerio Cozzani, Ernesto Salzano, Alessandro Tugnoli

The course is open for students of the universities and employees of the companies participating in the project, as well as for the external participants.

The course presents an introduction to Quantitative Risk Analysis, thus illustrating the necessary steps for the calculation of risk indexes.

Practical approach to frequency calculation and consequence assessment, including vulnerability models, will be discussed. A specific focus on domino effect and accidents triggered by Natural-Technological (Na-Tech) events will be presented.

The goal of the course is to give an introduction to Quantitative Risk Assessment and to introduce the participants to the analysis of risks originated outside the process boundary, i.e. due to external events. More specifically: domino effects and Na-Tech accidents due to earthquakes, flooding, lightning.
The participants will be introduced to the more accepted methodologies for chemical process risk analysis, with particular emphasis to the recent advancement on consequence analysis. A focus on the methods for the evaluation of domino effects will be presented, exemplifying the assessment of complex industrial layouts.
Na-Tech analysis methodologies developed within the Integ-risk project will provide training in supporting the resilience of industrial facilities to accidental scenario triggered by natural events.

The course is dedicated to participants interested in advanced applications of risk assessment:

  • Professionals dealing with risk issues on management and operational level
  • Individuals with general technical background which require a specific training in industrial safety and risk assessment
  • Students of mater courses in Process engineering, Industrial engineering, Risk engineering or similar courses

Lecturers: Prof. Valerio Cozzani, Dr. Ernesto Salzano, Dr. Alessandro Tugnoli

The aim of the course is the introduction to quantitative risk analysis. The steps necessary to calculate risk indexes starting from the results of hazard identification will be illustrated and demonstrated. Practical approach to frequency calculation and consequences assessment, including vulnerability models, will be discussed. The main risk indexes will be introduced and discussed. A case-study will be carried out to illustrate the calculation and the use of individual, societal and other advanced risk indexes.

Registration fees for participants are:

  • €500, (incl. VAT) regular fee
  • €400, (incl. VAT) for ETPIS members
  • €200, (incl. VAT) for iNTeg-Risk partners, members of the International Advisory Board and EU-VRi members and for students not mentioned elsewhere
  • Free of charge, for students enrolled in “European Master of Risk Engineering & Management” and the students of Uni Stuttgart covered by the agreement between University of Stuttgart and Steinbeis University Berlin
